Chapter 6 — My Sister Mocked My Salary While Booking the Estate She Never Knew I Controlled

4.9Editorial score

Vanessa’s promotions were celebrated.

Her expensive purchases were proof of taste.

Trevor’s salary was treated like character evidence.

David’s teaching job became a punch line because it wasn’t lucrative enough.

My quiet work became evidence that I lacked ambition.

No one had wondered whether David loved his classroom.

No one had asked whether I liked the life we had built.

They had only ranked it.

Mom stood.

“I’m sorry,” she said.

This time she didn’t add an explanation.

I believed she meant it in that moment.

I also knew one apology could not erase a pattern.

“Thank you,” I said.

Vanessa picked up her portfolio.

At the door, she stopped.

“Are you going to tell everyone at the wedding?”

I almost laughed.

Even now, her first instinct was to imagine a public reveal.

“No.”

She looked suspicious.

“Why not?”

“Because your wedding isn’t about me.”

Her expression shifted.

I continued.

“You wanted Belmore.

You paid for Belmore.

You’ll get the experience you purchased.

I don’t need a microphone to prove who owns the building.”

Vanessa looked away.

Then she left.

Trevor followed after giving me an awkward nod.

Mom stayed another moment, then quietly walked out too.

Patricia closed the door behind them.

For several seconds, neither of us spoke.

Then she sat in the chair Vanessa had vacated.

“I have been waiting two months for that meeting.”

I smiled despite myself.

“You enjoyed it too much.”

“I was extremely professional.”

“You almost smiled.”

“That allegation cannot be proven.”

I laughed then, the tension finally leaving my shoulders.

But when the room went quiet again, I looked at the closed door.

“Do you think I should have told them sooner?”

Patricia considered it.

“Would they have believed you?”

I thought about Vanessa laughing downstairs.

Probably not.

The wedding went forward as promised.

Belmore’s staff treated Vanessa exactly as we treated every bride: carefully, professionally, and without gossip.

The private grounds were immaculate.

The premium linens arrived.

The lighting team transformed the ballroom.

The wine cellar dinner the night before was flawless.

I attended as Vanessa’s sister, not as the owner.
