“She will listen if you remind her what public scandal will do to the baby.”
Evan looked up sharply.
There it was again.
The same method.
Turn the baby into leverage.
Turn Lily’s fear into compliance.
He finally heard how ugly it sounded when he was no longer benefiting from it.
“You threatened her before, didn’t you?” he asked.
His mother’s expression changed by less than an inch.
“That word is dramatic.”
“What did you say?”
“I told her a bitter divorce could become expensive.”
“What else?”
“She was making selfish decisions.”
“What else?”
His mother stepped closer.
“I reminded her that you have resources she does not.”
Evan stared at her.
Lily had mentioned the threat in her video.
Now his mother had effectively confirmed it.
“She was pregnant.”
“She still is.”
“And you tried to scare her into signing away control over assets tied to our family.”
“I tried to protect your company.”
“No,” Evan said.
“You protected the version of me you show people.”
His mother laughed once.
“You enjoyed that version of yourself plenty.”
He could not argue.
That afternoon, Evan’s attorney explained the situation without drama.
If investigators concluded Lily’s signature had been falsified and knowingly submitted, the consequences would not be limited to the failed financing.
Existing lenders could review prior representations.
Investors could demand audits.
Civil claims were possible.
Depending on what the records established, criminal exposure could not be ruled out.
Evan asked whether Lily could withdraw the complaint.
His attorney stared at him for a long moment.
“This is larger than your marriage now.”
That sentence frightened him more than anything else.
For years Evan had believed money could convert consequences into negotiations.
Now the people examining the records were not asking whether Lily still loved him.
They were asking who knew what, and when.
Vanessa called that evening.
Evan almost ignored her.
Then he answered.
“I saw something online about the financing,” she said cautiously.
“Is everything okay?”
“No.”
A pause.
“Is Lily doing this because of us?”
Evan looked at the photograph Lily had left beneath the elephant night-light.
“No,” he said.
“That’s the worst part.”
“What does that mean?”
“It means we were only the thing that made her look closer.”
He ended the call.
