Chapter 1 — My Stepson Said I Wasn’t Family—Then His Father Went Pale

4.9Editorial score

Daniel went pale before Jason seemed to realize he had said too much.

I kept my hand on the laptop and looked from my husband to my stepson.

“What exactly did your mother say?” I repeated.

Jason’s anger flickered.

For the first time that evening, he looked sixteen instead of invincible.

He glanced toward Daniel as if waiting for him to rescue the conversation.

Daniel didn’t.

“Nothing,” Jason muttered.

“That didn’t sound like nothing.”

He folded his arms.

“She just said you’d eventually get tired of pretending.”

“Pretending to do what?”

“To care about us.”

The words landed differently than the insult he had thrown at me earlier.

That afternoon, he had sounded cruel.

Now he sounded like someone repeating a lesson.

I turned my eyes to Daniel.

“How long has Melissa been saying that?”

Daniel exhaled hard.

“Rachel, this is getting blown out of proportion.”

“No.

The airplane got broken.

Ethan got told he wasn’t family.

Jason told me I had no right to expect respect in my own home.

That’s not out of proportion.”

Jason scoffed.

“This isn’t your house.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

I stared at Jason.

“Whose house is it?”

“Dad’s.”

There it was again.

Not ours.

Dad’s.

I looked at Daniel.

He said nothing.

That silence told me more than an argument would have.

The house had been purchased after Daniel and I married.

We both contributed to the household, but for years I had handled most of the invisible costs that kept four children’s lives moving smoothly.

I had never kept score because I thought that was what partnership meant.

Now I wondered whether everyone else had been keeping a very different score.

Jason’s phone buzzed in his hand.

He looked at it, then back at me.

“My data isn’t working.”

“I removed the line I pay for.”

“You can’t just take my phone.”

“I didn’t take your phone.”

“You shut it off.”

“I stopped paying for the service.”

He looked at Daniel.

“Dad?”

Daniel stepped forward.

“Rachel, restore the phone tonight.

We can talk about consequences tomorrow.”

“No.”

It was the first clean no I had given him in years.
